Airplane-Themed Birthday Party Ideas for Toddlers

This August, we celebrated Wyatt’s second birthday, and since he’s always pointing at airplanes in the sky, it felt only fitting to create an airplane-themed birthday party! We actually celebrated twice: first with an intimate family gathering on his actual birthday, and then with a bigger party on the weekend with grandparents, cousins, and more family. Both days were so special, and I loved seeing Wyatt’s joy as we leaned into this playful, travel-inspired theme.

If you’re planning an airplane-themed birthday party for your little one, I’m sharing all the details of what we did — from decor to food to toddler-friendly activities — plus extra ideas you can recreate to make the day feel magical.

Celebration #1: Sweet & Simple Family Party

On Wyatt’s actual birthday (which fell mid-week), we kept things small and intimate with just me, my husband, and Wyatt.

Here’s what I set up:

  • Colors: soft blues, beige, white, with touches of gold for a classic travel vibe.

  • Backdrop: a minimalist tapestry from Etsy that wasn’t overpowering and a fabric banner in shades of blue.

  • Balloons: helium-filled balloons in coordinating colors (so magical for a toddler to wake up to!).

  • Table Decor: a blue and white gingham table runner, baby’s breath in a vase, and vintage suitcases on the floor for that “travel nostalgia.”

  • DIY Touches: I made tiny party hats for Wyatt’s stuffed animals (such a cute detail for little ones).

  • Cake: I baked a healthy cake (the same recipe I used for his first birthday!) and decorated it to look like the sky with fluffy white clouds and a tiny airplane figurine topper.

It was cozy, minimal, and so special for him to wake up to on his big day. Later that day, we went to do the beach and set up a picnic blanket. He played with his beach toys and climbed the sand dunes. It was such a fun special day with just us.

Celebration #2: Weekend Family Party

On Saturday, we had a bigger party with family and cousins. I refreshed the decor and made it a little more festive for the larger group.

Here’s what we did:

  • Balloons (Round 2): the foil airplane and number balloon still held helium, but I plumped them back up with air for display. I redid the latex balloons for a fresh look. I did more of a garland style the second time.

  • Tableware: a party set with gingham blue paper plates, cups, and utensils (tying in the table runner from the first celebration).

  • Cake: another homemade cake, again topped with little airplane figurines.

  • Activities for Kids: airplane stickers with paper + coloring pencils, and a hopscotch mat indoors for energetic toddlers.

  • Food: pizza, chicken, salad, and Brazilian “docinhos” (sweet treats my mom made that were a hit with everyone!).

  • Fun & Play: the kids had such a great time coloring, playing with toys, and running around together.

Wyatt was overjoyed having his cousins there to celebrate, and it felt like the perfect blend of thoughtful decor and laid-back family fun!

More Airplane-Themed Birthday Ideas

If you’re planning your own version of an airplane birthday, here are some additional ideas to consider:

  • Boarding Pass Invitations – send guests “tickets” to Wyatt’s airline.

  • Baggage Claim Favors – set up a small table with favor bags labeled as “carry-ons.”

  • Runway Game – use painter’s tape to create a mini runway where kids can “take off” with toy planes.

  • Cloud Cupcakes – simple frosted cupcakes with fluffy white frosting “clouds.”

  • Snack Bar: call it “In-Flight Snacks” with popcorn, pretzels, and juice boxes.

  • Photo Booth Corner: hang a map, clouds, or globe backdrop with pilot hats and toy goggles for fun pictures.

Wyatt’s airplane-themed second birthday turned out exactly how I hoped — sweet, whimsical, and full of love. I loved balancing a more intimate mid-week celebration with a bigger family party on the weekend. It goes to show that you don’t need to choose between simple and festive… you can do both!

The airplane theme is so versatile — it can be vintage and classic, modern and minimal, or colorful and fun. Most of all, it’s the perfect way to celebrate just how fast these little years are flying by. ✨
