Hi friends! Today’s post is dedicated to silk midi skirts because I absolutely love them! I believe they should be a staple in every women’s closet. Silk or satin skirts are timeless and there are so many ways to style them. As I grew up, I tried to refine my style more and more. I found that silk midi skirts can look so classy and elegant depending what you pair with it. You can dress it up or down depending on where you’re going.
So what makes an item a staple, you ask? Well, I would say it’s something you can wear multiple times in multiple ways. Bonus points if you can wear it throughout different seasons. And guess what? A silk midi skirt is just that!
When it comes to purchasing clothing, splurging on quality staple pieces will be more bang for your buck instead of splurging on something you may only wear twice. But if you have no budget, then by all means, spend as you’d like. But for me right now, If I’m going to splurge on a clothing item, I prefer it to be something that will stay in style. However, the skirt I’m wearing in the images below is affordable as I got it at an outlet store. But silk skirts are worth the investment because they look great in so many different occasions.
8 Ways To Style A Silk Midi Skirt
In the pictures below, I styled my silk midi skirt with a fitted black crop top. I didn’t want a shirt that is super cropped because I was aiming for a more elegant look. But as I mentioned before, this silk skirt can go so many ways. My skirt already had a pattern so I kept it solid with my top and styled it with green thong heels. The heels were short kitten heels that were comfortable enough for me to wear in downtown Seattle.
Other ways you can style your silk midi skirt…
1. Pair it with a blazer, coat, or denim jacket
During spring, you could pair the silk skirt with a denim jacket which is more of a casual look. Denim tends to dress down a look.
A blazer could work for any season depending on the weather. I would say the blazer is a more elevated way to style a silk midi skirt. It’s also a day to night style because you could wear a crop top underneath the blazer during the day and then wear a spaghetti strap top at night. To go a step further, the blazer could be buttoned up and paired with a waist belt over the satin skirt. I’ve seen some girls pull this look off and every time I see it I think to myself, “that person has style.” It is more of an elevated look.
The coat paired with the silk skirt is a winter look and you could wear a sweater underneath the coat for more warmth.
2. Wear it with a sweater
As mentioned above, you can pair a silk or satin skirt with a sweater. I absolutely love this look! It is so elegant. To pull off this style, you could wear the sweater with the front hem tucked inside the skirt and leave the back hem down. Or you could completely leave the hems alone and just have the sweater over the satin skirt. If your sweater is long, it’s better not to tuck it. Cropped sweaters can also pair really well with a high-waist satin skirt. In that case, you wouldn’t need to tuck it.
3. Dress it down with a basic tee
Wearing it with a basic tee is cute and laid-back. I would suggest tucking in the shirt if it’s a bit long. Or you could do a little knot on the bottom hem of the shirt to cinch in the waist. This way it looks less bulky and creates a better silhouette shape. Basic tees with a satin skirt is cute look without trying overly hard. White sneakers look great with this overall look.
4. Pair it with a silk top
Wearing a silk top with a silk midi skirt is a dressed up style. Usually it comes in sets, so the top is the same color/print as the skirt. You don’t necessarily need to buy it in a set, but the goal is to have a unified look and not have the top clash with the bottom. You can do a silk spaghetti strap top and tuck it inside the skirt for a dressed up style. If you’re aiming for that office look, you could do a silk button down with the silk skirt.
5. Wear it with a button down top
A button down top is classy when paired with the satin skirt. You could completely tuck in the shirt or tie the front for a laid-back look. Also, note what kind of fabric the button down top is. If it’s also silk, you’re leaning into a more office style dressed up look. If it’s linen, you’re leaning towards the beachy summer look. Think about your occasion to determine whether to wear the button down tucked in or tied in the front.
6. Wear a crop top with it
Another option you could do is wear a crop top with the satin skirt. Crop tops are better for summer/spring since you’re showing some skin. If you want to keep it classy, layer the crop top with an open (unbuttoned) button down shirt. As mentioned earlier, you could also layer the crop top with a blazer to scale it up a notch.
7. Keep it simple with a spaghetti strap
During the summer, a spaghetti strap top looks great with the satin midi skirt. Both are light and breathable. Throw on open-toed heels and you’re good to go!
8. Wear it with boots during winter
In Florida, I haven’t seen this look too often but I love seeing a silk midi skirt styled with knee-high boots! In the fall, a satin skirt with a slit on the side and the knee-high boot paired with it looks great. Instead of always wearing pants in cold weather, you could layer pantyhose or tights underneath the satin skirt for extra warmth and throw on the boots. It’s more unique than just wearing jeans with a sweater. Obviously shorter boots could be paired with silk midi skirts as well. The length is ultimately up to you and how much coverage you need based on the weather.
Lately, I’ve been eyeing Chelsea boots. In Florida, we hardly ever wear boots but whenever I visit Dillon’s family in North Caroline in the later months of the year, or when traveling to a colder place in general, I definitely will stock up on these. I remember when Doc Martins were a huge thing, but lately I feel myself drawn more towards strapless Chelsea boots than Doc Martins. Like how you would wear white sneakers with the silk midi skirt in the summer, Chelsea boots are the winter version of that. They are comfy and laid-back, yet super stylish.
