On our way back into Italy after a beautiful trip to Croatia, my husband, toddler, and I made a little detour to visit Castle Miramare in Trieste — and I’m so glad we did. The stop turned into one of those spontaneous travel moments that feel straight out of a fairytale.
I wore a dreamy tiered dress from Lulus and honestly, the whole time I was walking through the gardens and looking out over the Adriatic Sea, I felt like a modern-day princess visiting her seaside castle.
Exploring the Castle Grounds
We decided not to go inside the castle itself and instead focused on exploring the outdoor grounds — which turned out to be perfect for our little one. Wyatt loved running around the wide pathways, stopping to peek at the water, and finding little spots to explore among the gardens.
The setting is absolutely stunning: manicured hedges, stone staircases, sweeping ocean views, and that gorgeous white castle as your backdrop. Even without stepping indoors, the experience felt full and magical.
A Sweet Ending: Gelato by the Sea
Before leaving, we treated ourselves to gelato on-site near the entrance — because what’s a castle visit in Italy without something sweet? We sat with our cones, watching the waves and soaking in the moment. It was the perfect way to wrap up the visit.
Tips for Visiting Castle Miramare
If you’re planning to add Castle Miramare to your itinerary, here are some tips from our experience:
-
Parking: There’s parking near the entrance, but it can fill up during peak times. Arriving earlier in the day or later in the afternoon can help.
-
Grounds-Only Visit: You don’t have to go inside to enjoy the castle — the gardens, pathways, and sea views are beautiful and completely worth the trip.
-
Toddler-Friendly: The wide open spaces are great for kids to roam. Just be mindful near the water’s edge and any staircases.
-
Time Needed: We spent about 1–1.5 hours wandering the grounds and enjoying gelato, which felt just right for a travel day stop.
-
Best Time of Year: Spring through early fall is ideal for the gardens, but winter visits can be peaceful with fewer crowds.
-
Wear Comfortable Shoes: Even though I felt like a princess in my dress and kitten heels, I switched into my backup slides that I brought in order to chase my toddler around. There’s quite a bit of walking if you want to see it all so definitely bring comfy shoes.
Why We Loved This Stop
Castle Miramare was the perfect way to break up our drive from Croatia back into Italy — scenic, relaxing, and full of charm. Whether you explore inside or simply enjoy the outdoor grounds like we did, it’s a little piece of history and romance right on the water.
If you’re in the Trieste area or passing through, I can’t recommend it enough… and don’t skip the gelato!
